S-T-R-E-T-C-H out of Your Comfort Zone!

What is the ‘comfort zone’ exactly, and why do we stay inside it even if, deep down, we know it might not be the best place for us to get the most out of our life?

Grab a pen, and draw a circle on a piece of paper. Then:

  • write inside the circle everything that matters in your life right now (health, romance, career, finances, friends and family etc)

  • write outside of the circle everything you desire in your life, but do not currently have

Getting what you desire will most probably require you to do something new or different: stretching out of what you currently know and do.

We’re creatures of habit and hardwired to seek out comfort and security - thanks to a defence mechanism encoded in our brain to ensure our survival.

Your comfort zone is an artificial mental boundary, which provides you with a sense of familiarity and (sometimes false) safety.

For many people, the natural inclination is therefore to stay within what they’re familiar with, even if they are unhappy or unfulfilled. Many stay in jobs, relationships that don’t bring the best out of them, and accept situations that they resent - only because they are afraid of the unknown. What about you?

Whether your comfort zone is comfortable or not, it is limiting you. If you choose to stay in your comfort zone you will most probably never find out what you are capable of achieving.

Doing similar things, gravitating around the same type of people, having the same experiences or avoiding taking any risk means that your situation is unlikely to change (for the best) - or that you’ll grow personally (and professionally).

If, however, you make the decision to move beyond what is familiar, the odds are high that:

  • you’ll discover a lot about yourself

  • you’ll increase your level of self-confidence and self-esteem

  • you’ll learn how to navigate and overcome your fears

  • you’ll become comfortable with what is uncomfortable

  • you’ll take responsibility for what is happening (or not) in your life

Of course you don't have to do anything extraordinarily or out of character, like climbing Mt. Everest or backpacking around the world, if you have no inclination or desire for it. Stretching yourself does not have to be extreme and will be different for everyone.

Remember that you are capable of so much more than you ever believed
