2 Simple yet Powerful Techniques for Lifetime Change
What is the number ONE emotion or behaviour, that if it were to be eliminated from your life, would enable you to feel happier, and allow your life to flow much more easily?
Your thoughts and emotions shape your reality, and some of them work 'against’ you and not ‘for’ you. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you become aware of this and enable you to make lasting changes.
Today, I would like to share two powerful tools with you.
Have you recently heard a song that you listened to when you were younger, which immediately took you back to a memory from your past? Well, we all do - as we all make connection between a stimulus (such as a song) and a specific emotion (how we were feeling at the time we were listening to the song ).
‘Anchoring’ is widely used in personal growth, as it helps you to choose intentionally how to feel. For example, you may want to feel more confident for an upcoming talk, a presentation, or to deal more easily with daily challenges.
If you are keen to try this experiment, follow the following steps:
Identify what you want to feel, such as confident, happy, energized or the positive state of your choice
Recall an event in your life where you felt the emotion you’ve identified and desire. Trust yourself and relax, let the memory come up naturally
Choose in your mind an ‘anchor’ to use in this process. It can involve touch, such as squeezing your thumb and forefinger together
Close your eyes and relax
Relive that memory: what you saw, heard and felt in that moment – you’ve got to be ‘there’ again. Focus on this memory with all your senses, as intensely as you can and until the desired feeling is coming back and you feel it strongly in your body
Set your anchor by touching your thumb and forefinger together when you really feel the desired emotion, and then release your fingers
Repeat the process several times
If you’ve done the process well, and there isn’t any underlying issue that needs to be dealt with, you now have set an NLP anchor. You will be able to access that feeling anytime you want, by pressing together your thumb and your forefinger. Try it out!
What was your reaction when you realized that in the current COVID pandemic, you would not be able to go on holidays, do something you had planned on doing, and suddenly you were either on your own or surrounded by family members all day long?
In ‘Reframing’, you choose what the event means to you. When things don’t go the way you want (I’m sure that we can agree that it happens to all of us), you can choose to acknowledge that the situation is not what you had wished for, AND also look at what is the ‘good’ that comes out of that situation - and focus on that aspect.
This is not about denying the sadness, anger or disappointment you may feel. In my view, it is very important to acknowledge those feelings and give space to them. It is acknowledging that the situation is what it is and ALSO Reframing it - which is the art of actively choosing how you respond to it.
Life is made of changes, and at all stages, you have the choice on how you respond. It is not the event itself that affects you, it’s how you respond to it.
For most of us, it takes some practice to get into this Reframing habit – a simple technique and yet not always an easy one to apply. I can promise you though, that it’s a very liberating and empowering way of thinking.
