5 Steps to Turn a Challenge into Growth
We all have challenges in our life, some bigger than others. It can happen when we are confronted with a situation that takes us out of our comfort zone and triggers emotions that we would rather put aside or ignore, than deal with.
It took me time to realise that these moments have a hidden function: they can make us grow (which happens less frequently when everything is calm or peaceful in our life).
So, what can you choose to do, and turn a challenge into growth?
Acknowledge the situation as it is: what is happening (or not) right now? Be precise, name it
Be honest with yourself and identify your feelings. Invite your emotions ‘for tea’, make space for them to be expressed and heard - including fear, anger, sadness, uncertainty etc. If repressed, they’ll end up catching up with you later
I personally spend time with myself meditating or journalling. If you’re not familiar with these practices, switch off your phone and spend some time on your own. Ask yourself what you would ask your best friend if she was in rut. Question the emotion itself: if it wanted to attract your attention on something very important to you, what would that be? Grab a pen and jot your thoughts down. Repeat, as necessary
Then, ask yourself what you truly want out of this situation. Give yourself permission to open up to new possibilities, challenge the way you’ve been looking at it: what if you could approach it from a different perspective? What if it was the opportunity to try something new? Be curious, explore how you could transform to end up better off, even if it’s not obvious or easy at the moment
Focus on the future, put all your energy on creating what you want. Be mindful of your thoughts and your words - believe it or not, they have a direct impact on how you feel (physically and emotionally) and behave
Set up a plan of action, and looking forward, take one step at the time. Start with small ones on a daily basis, and work with a coach, if you need to
For me, Maya Angelou's quote "Life will throw you challenges, but it is in those challenges that you learn who you are" has proven true, and continues to be. What’s your experience?
