The Power of Being Thankful

Thanksgiving is a good time to write a few words about gratitude - whether or not you celebrate it.

Are you fed up of hearing and being told “be thankful for what you have" (in this challenging time)?

I can understand! We all want things that we don’t have. We all long to do things that we can’t do. We all miss loved ones and experience some fears about the uncertainty of the future. It’s easy to feel ungrateful in a way. You may be surprised to realise, however, that expressing thanks for your life, at a time of challenge and change, can have a positive impact biologically - on your mind and body.

Gratitude can change your life because it shifts your focus on appreciating what you have, rather than what you don’t have. Look around you: life is all about focus. Whatever you focus on, you attract more of. When you spend more time in a state of lack, negativity … isn’t that when you seem to attract more dilemmas and problems?

When you stop taking so many things for granted and start truly appreciating what you receive, whether it’s tangible (a gift) or intangible (kindness), it helps you connect with other people, nature and for some people with a higher power. You feel more at peace and less fearful (and, by the way, you can’t experience the sensation of gratitude and fear at the same time).

Every morning, you have the opportunity to trigger a mental and emotional state that will change the course of your day. If you start your day on the right footing, you may be surprised at the momentum you can create for yourself and those around you. By expressing gratitude and connecting genuinely with this feeling, your brain releases dopamine and serotonin. These two hormones are responsible for ‘feel good’ emotions, making you feel happy from within. By consciously practicing gratitude everyday, you’ll build neural pathways creating a more grateful and positive nature, and long lasting contentment and happiness.

When was the last time you were genuinely and truly grateful for the roof over your heads, the food on your plate, the air you breathe, the touch of your partner’ skin in the morning, a kiss from a person you love, a smile from a stranger, the voice of your best friend on the phone, the song of a bird, the taste of a new chocolate…and so many other things?
